Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office
history
The Office of Sheriff for the City of Baltimore has existed since 1845 and is the first organized local law enforcement agency in Baltimore City. The creation of the Sheriff’s Office predates the creation if the Baltimore City Police by eight years.
The authority granted to the Sheriff of Baltimore City comes from common law established by the Constitution of the State of Maryland. As an independent and elected office, the Sheriff of Baltimore City is directly accountable to the citizens of Baltimore.
